Hello everybody, we played American football at Gutenberg and it was great!!!

Gutenberg Encyclopedia for kids

In order to practice American football we need :

– a helmet with a facemask to protect against injuries

– a jersey, which is the tee-shirt with a number of the American football players (We use them to make the difference between the players and to know them.)

– cleats, which are American football player’s sneakers.

We need all this equipment to practice this sport safely.

There are eleven players in each team.

The game starts with a kickoff. The kicking team must score in the goal line. The ball carrier can throw the ball to another teammate and score a touchdown. But the receiving team tries to stop the other team. They can tackle the ball carrier in order to get the ball back.

The field may be made of grass or of artificial turf. It is 91.44 meters long and 48.8 meters wide. There is a goal line at each end of the field with a crossbar 3 meters above the ground.

A funny anecdote : American football is also named ‘gridiron football’ because the field is divided into lines and looks like the metal grid used on barbecues.

Superbowl is the annual final play off game of the National Football League (NFL). It was created in 1966.

The name of the trophy is the‘Vince Lombardi Trophy’ .

The trophy was named after the former Green Bay Packers head coach Vince Lombardi who died of cancer in 1970.

Every year, a singer sings for the event.

This year it was Chris Stapleton (see photo).

The most recent winners are the Chiefs of Kansas city.

American football is not soccer nor English rugby.
